Samuel Boateng is an award-winning sales professional who has quickly ascended the cooperate ladder of various companies due to an insatiable drive for success and a natural flair for management. Having risen to prominence in business, Samuel was selected to be a candidate on BBC One’s The Apprentice in 2016, becoming the first Ghanaian to appear on one of the UK’s most popular TV shows.

Samuel now runs several projects with the main aim of helping and developing start-ups, entrepreneurs and creatives build their ideas and businesses. His strive for success proves there are no limits to what a young Ghanaian professional can achieve. GUBA interviews Samuel Boateng to find out more about his work.

Congratulations on your nomination for the Professional of the Year Award! How do you feel about it?

Thank you! I feel honoured to have received the nomination as there are so many inspiring Ghanaian professionals in the UK. Many of us have worked hard to create change and push boundaries in our respective fields, so to be nominated is very humbling.

Tell us a little about yourself and what you do

I was born in London but grew up in Manchester. I went to University in Sheffield and came back to London after graduating in 2013. When I arrived back in London I had nothing but £180 to my name, but I was determined to make it in London.  After just two years, I worked my way to an Area Sales manager position responsible for managing and generating new business for over 700 businesses across London.

Why would you say you deserve to win?

All the nominees deserve to win for their inspiring work and for making great impacts in their fields. I believe the reason people would like to see me win the award is because of the hope I give. My journey from moving to London in 2013 to being the first Ghanaian to appear on the UK’s biggest business TV series with over 6 million TV viewers each week gives people incredible hope. To be able to pioneer such change and open the door for others to follow has been amazing and through the work I do with my team, hopefully we can continue to inspire change and raise more Ghanaian professionals who will be great pioneers in their fields and inspire others.

What motivates you and your work?

What motivates me is the impact I see I am having on the next generation of Ghanaians. I have been stopped on many occasions by people who tell me that I inspire them and they have quit their jobs to pursue their dream careers or have started businesses through what they see me doing. I want to see Ghanaians at the forefront of business, finance, politics, entertainment, fashion, sports, education, music etc. Hopefully more Ghanaians will continue to take bold steps and become leaders in their fields, inspiring the next generation to push for greater heights.

What are your thoughts on the GUBA Awards?

I believe it is important to recognise the work and efforts of fellow Ghanaians who would otherwise potentially not receive the appreciation and encouragement they deserve and need. It is important as a people that we encourage and empower each other, building one another to be greater. By highlighting the positive contribution Ghanaians are making, it inspires and encourages other Ghanaians to know that they too can make an impact in whatever field they wish to work in.

Are you involved in any other projects?

I have founded SPB Projects through which we help start-ups, entrepreneurs and creatives build their ideas and businesses. Through our projects, we also work with schools and young people with the aim of inspiring them and teaching them that they have no limits. I am also in the process of developing an innovative recruitment platform which will launch later on in the year.
