Ten year old GUBA award winner Lewis Appiagyei, visited Dubai this week to participate in a round of the Sodi World Series Junior Cup, at the Dubai Outdoor Kartdrome. Karting regularly in a Sodi event at Buckmore Park, he wanted to take the opportunity to make an impact on an international level.
Lewis attended a practice session which enabled him to familiarize himself with the track and put what he had studied on paper and in his head to the test. The practice session strengthened his belief that it was possible to achieve his goal of winning the race. Having drawn a very slow kart in qualifying, he had to start the race from the back of the grid. In race one he had a brilliant start and was quickly off the mark to overtake the other competitors. After just a few laps he got into the lead and continued to build a margin which made him impossible to catch up with. He even lapped the back-marker and drove to victory in his first ever international race at the Kartdrome.
Following his first win, he then started on pole for race two. Lewis pulled away early on from the rest of the field and drove into a considerable lead. Unfortunately, his kart then ran out of juice during the final lap, but he still managed to secure a podium finish. His two trophies will take pride of place in his ever-growing collection
