Plus size modelling brings a new and exciting dimension to the fashion world. The representation of full figured women in various magazines unveils the new era of modelling and its effort to represent the everyday woman.
Philomena Kwao is an astounding young lady who broke the mould to become Britain’s first black plus size model, after beating thousands of hopefuls in a competition held by clothing brand, EVANS. As a former Miss Ghana UK (2008) finalist, she has since gone on to star in various fashion campaigns from which she has gained much deserved publicity in mainstream media including the Cosmopolitan magazine.
Philomena’s recognition led to her nomination for a GUBA Rising Star award against the likes of Portia Oti of Sky TV’s ‘GOT TO DANCE’ and with a strong support from the public went on to win the prestigious GUBA award. Speaking to GUBA shortly after winning her award, Philomena admits: “It is an absolutely amazing feeling to have won the GUBA Rising Star award. The recognition and support that I have received is very humbling and means so much to me. This award has also enhanced my sense of responsibility, as I work to ensure that I am a good role model to other young people. Although my journey is just beginning, this award signifies that I am not alone, and for that I say thank you GUBA”
As a focused and academic individual, Philomena hopes that through her story she is able to empower girls to build their self-esteem and to follow their dreams. Alongside modelling, she aims to combine her academic discipline; economics with her love for health, by drafting policies and provisions for sustainable development in developing economies.
Philomena’s hope for the upcoming years is to excel in her modelling career “I hope to move from strength to strength and to also explore different markets” she added. “My advice to anyone trying to achieve their dreams is: be patient, persevere and with hard work, at the right time, everything will fall into place”.
We have no doubt that Philomena will continue to excel in the modelling world as well as her long term aim of educating the underprivileged. We at GUBA will like to wish our Rising Star all the best in her endeavours towards progress.
